Terms of Service
Last updated: 5 October 2026
These terms are an agreement between you (the organisation or person using the Service, “you”) and Career Catalyst & Recruitment Ltd, trading as The Career Catalyst, a company registered in England and Wales (number 16689261), registered office 82a James Carter Road, Mildenhall, Suffolk, England, IP28 7DE (“we”, “us”) for the use of Career Catalyst Screener (“the Service”). By creating an account or using the Service you agree to them. Please read them carefully.
1. The Service
The Service helps recruiters screen job applications. It reads CVs and application forms, compares them with a job description and criteria you set, scores and ranks them, and helps you produce shortlist reports and contact candidates. We may improve or change features over time; we will not remove a core feature of a paid plan during a period you have already paid for.
2. Who can use it
- The Service is for business use by organisations and their staff. You must be at least 18 and, if you use it for an organisation, have authority to accept these terms on its behalf.
- You must give accurate account details, keep your sign-in secure and tell us promptly if you think your account has been misused. You are responsible for activity under your account.
3. Plans, payment and cancellation
- Plans. Plan features and limits (such as CVs per month) are shown on our pricing page and in Settings → Billing. Monthly CV allowances reset at the start of each calendar month and don't roll over. The Free plan includes a one-off allowance of 30 CVs that doesn't reset.
- Paddle is our reseller. Our order process is conducted by our online reseller Paddle.com, who is the Merchant of Record for all our orders. Paddle provides all customer service inquiries and handles returns. Paddle's buyer terms also apply to your purchase.
- Renewal. Paid plans renew automatically at the end of each billing period (monthly or yearly) until cancelled. Prices are shown excluding VAT where applicable; tax is calculated at checkout.
- Changing plan. Upgrades and downgrades take effect straight away, and the price difference is charged or credited on a pro-rata basis.
- Cancelling. You can cancel at any time from Settings → Billing. Your plan stays active until the end of the period you have paid for, then your account moves to the Free plan. We don't refund part-periods except where required by law or Paddle's refund policy.
- Consumers. The Service is intended for businesses. If you are a consumer, nothing in these terms affects your statutory rights, including your right to cancel within 14 days under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013.
- Price changes. We will give at least 30 days' notice of a price change, which applies from your next renewal.
4. Your responsibilities for candidate data
When you upload applicants' documents, you are the controller of that personal data and we process it for you under our Data Processing Agreement, which forms part of these terms. You agree that:
- you have a lawful basis to collect and process the applicants' data, and you tell applicants how their data is used, including that screening software is used to help assess applications;
- you will keep meaningful human review of every recruitment decision. Scores and shortlists are aids to prioritise reading, not decisions, and you will not reject an applicant solely because of an automated score without a person considering the application;
- you will use criteria that are relevant to the job and comply with the Equality Act 2010, and will not set criteria that discriminate, directly or indirectly, on the basis of a protected characteristic;
- you will not upload special category data or criminal offence data unless you have a lawful condition to do so, and you will set and follow your own retention periods for applicant data;
- you will check the original application before excluding a candidate, including those flagged as not meeting essential criteria, because wording in documents can vary.
5. Acceptable use
You must not:
- use the Service unlawfully, or to process data you have no right to process;
- upload malicious files, attempt to access other customers' data, or test, scan or disrupt the Service without our written permission;
- use the email features to send spam or messages unrelated to a recruitment process;
- resell or share access to the Service outside your organisation, or copy, reverse engineer or build a competing service from it.
6. Results and accuracy
Scores are produced automatically from the text in the documents you upload and the criteria you set. They can be affected by document formatting, scanned images, missing information or differences in wording, and they don't assess personal qualities. We provide the Service with reasonable skill and care, but we don't guarantee that any score, ranking or shortlist is complete, accurate or suitable for a particular hiring decision. Decisions remain your responsibility.
7. Your data and our intellectual property
- You own the content you upload. You give us permission to use it only to provide and support the Service for you.
- We own the Service, including its software, design and scoring methods. These terms give you a right to use it while your account is open; they don't transfer ownership.
- You can delete jobs and candidates at any time. When your account closes, we delete your data within 30 days, as described in our Privacy Policy.
8. Availability and support
We aim to keep the Service available at all times but can't promise it will be uninterrupted or error-free. We may carry out maintenance, ideally outside UK working hours. Service levels for Enterprise customers are agreed in their order form.
9. Suspension and termination
You can ask us to close your account at any time by contacting us; cancel any paid plan first in Settings → Billing. We may suspend or close an account that breaches these terms, puts the Service or others at risk, or hasn't paid, and we will give notice where reasonable. Sections 4, 7, 10 and 12 continue to apply after termination.
10. Liability
- Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or any liability that cannot be limited by law.
- Subject to that, we are not liable for loss of profits, revenue, business, goodwill or data, or for any indirect or consequential loss, or for recruitment decisions you make using the Service.
- Subject to that, our total liability to you in any 12-month period is limited to the fees you paid us for the Service in that period (or £100 if you are on the Free plan).
11. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms, for example when we add features or the law changes. We will give at least 30 days' notice of changes that materially affect you by email or in the Service. If you don't agree, you can cancel before the change takes effect.
12. General
- These terms, the Data Processing Agreement and any order form are the whole agreement between us about the Service.
- If any part is found unenforceable, the rest stays in effect. A failure to enforce a right is not a waiver of it.
- These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction, except that consumers may also bring proceedings in their home part of the UK.
